Template principle

Dark reveals preserve the scene outline while withholding the identity, object, or color information that resolves it.

Starting settings

Dial in the effect, then adapt it to your source.

Reveal strength84%
Blur5 px
Contrast+28
Saturation-18

These values are a starting point, not a fixed recipe. Image brightness, edge detail, and destination compression can change the best result.

Four-step workflow

Build a reveal that still reads before it changes.

  1. 01

    Protect the silhouette

Keep enough edge information for the scene to remain legible in the timeline.

  2. 02

    Hide identifying detail

Mask the face, object, title, creature, or product feature that resolves the image.

  3. 03

    Lift crushed shadows

Avoid turning the entire timeline state into one black rectangle.

  4. 04

    Test platform contrast

Preview on a dark interface before publishing the final file.

Suspense

Darkness should direct attention, not remove the composition.

A dark reveal can support horror art, character introductions, game announcements, film stills, product silhouettes, and spoiler-sensitive imagery. The timeline state needs one readable shape or light cue that gives the viewer a reason to inspect it.

If every area is equally dark, the image loses hierarchy and may resemble a failed upload. Preserve a rim light, horizon, outline, or environmental clue while withholding the detail that identifies the subject.

Technical balance

Keep shadow information above the compression floor.

Social platforms can compress subtle dark gradients into bands or blocks. Avoid making small tonal differences responsible for the entire effect. Use shape, contrast, and a controlled mask boundary to maintain readability.

Inspect the exported PNG at normal timeline size. If the subject disappears completely, reduce reveal strength or raise the source exposure before rebuilding the reveal.

The timeline only shows the silhouette. Expand the image to see what is waiting inside it.

Template questions

Why does my dark reveal look like a black box?

Reduce reveal strength and preserve a silhouette, rim light, horizon, or other readable scene cue.

What should the mask cover?

Cover the identifying detail rather than the entire scene: a face, object, title, product feature, or spoiler.

How can I reduce banding?

Use a cleaner source, avoid extremely subtle gradients, and keep important edges above near-black values.

Does this template work for product launches?

Yes. Product silhouettes and controlled highlights can create a strong announcement reveal.
